Another backlog game completed and I was pleasantly surprised. South Park: The Stick of Truth is one of those RPGs that does not focus on deep leveling or specialization customization, but rather wants to tell you a story, a specific South Park story that is.
This is also the most important thing to keep in mind from the very first seconds when creating your character to the very last scene of this game, you are in South Park. Everyone you know and love from the TV-series is there. From the various houses, the school, the mall, the teachers and of course the neighborhood kids.
It is there where your story begins, as a blank slate you come in contact with Butters and Cartman after which you will join in the epic quest of The Stick of Truth. During the story you will get to make various choices, like siding parties or partaking or avoiding combat, all of course in the style that makes South Park unique.
I’ve bought this game years ago during a sale when it was at an all-time low, but never thought much of it. However after the very first interactions with the NPCs and the first fight I was hooked. In 3 days I’ve completed the game including all the sidequests. This is very rare for me, especially when it comes to RPGs. Now to be honest, the game does not have much depth and the combat system is quite shallow, but the execution is top notch. Everything breathes South Park and I cannot give enough compliments to the teams at Obsidian Entertainment and South Park Digital Studios.
So if you are a fan of the series and want to live an unique and funny South Park story, this game is for you, even if you are not a die-hard gamer. I’ll be keeping an eye out for South Park: The Fractured But Whole the next time it goes on sale.
